Brutus Starslayer
Half Troll Faerie hybrid. “Procurement Specialist” AKA Thief. Hired by Ixon and Tantalus to steal the Eye of Elysium. Brutus is a hybrid between Princess Amariel of the Faerie Court, and Troll Warlord Khurgg. Amariel was among a convoy which was attacked by Khurrg and raided. During the raid Khurrg forced himself upon the princess. She was among the only survivors of the attack. Amariel later discovered to her horror that she was pregnant. Due to Fae law prohibiting the murder of fae by one another, Amariel chose to carry the half fae child to term rather than breach the laws of her people. Amariel herself died during the delivery, a tragedy which broke her father Lord Namaroth. His eldest daughter Namarienne took to raising the child. Lord Namaroth grief was so great he blamed the child, he named Brutus, for constant recollection of the circumstances of his conception, and treated him coldly and sometimes with extreme cruelty.
Brutus was raised in the Court of his grandfather Namaroth and was treated as an outcast and dubbed by the court the Starslayer in reference to his having killed his mother in childbirth, as a constant reminder of his “sin”. His only friend was a young page named Silvanen who also became the young man’s first love. One night shortly after his 16th birthday, he and Silvanen were discovered sharing a kiss and embrace and Silvanen turned against the young Brutus, claiming that Brutus had bewitched him with “dark trollish magics as is his nature”.
That night, heartbroken and betrayed, he left the court and sought out his father’s realm, hoping as a young man to find the acceptance among the Trollish warriors under his father’s command. This proved to be far worse, and after five years of living in a near slave like state to his father Khurrg, he fled again, turning his back on both the Trollish and Fae realms, and determined to forge his own path and place in the world.
Brutus used the powers of the two halves of his ancestry to forge a life as a daredevil rogue and thief. After living this life about 200 years, having many adventures and “procuring” countless items for countless clients both good and evil, he is contacted by two mysterious “greeks” to steal an artifact of great power, from the forge of an Olympian god himself. Intrigued, Brutus accepted the assignment which would put him the course to his role in the story of The Hammer of Argus.
Description:
Brutus has several characteristics and abilities that are a results of his dual heredity. He is much stronger, and more durable than members of the fae due to his trollish ancestry, but is not as fast or agile (however both these attributes are greater than a standard troll).
Brutus also possesses the power of glamour like other fae, although this power is diminished due to his hybrid nature. He can conceal his presence from the minds of others, become practically invisible or alter the perception of himself in the minds of others, making the weaker willed see him how he wishes to be seen. He also will on a normal level constantly emanate an air of attraction to males and females alike, which he often uses to his advantage.
Unlike the fae he cannot become completely truly invisible, nor can he truly alter his size, shape or appearance. Due to this nature he is also immune to the disorientation and effects of traversing between the mortal realm and the world of fae. He can extend this immunity to anyone traveling in his company between realms as long as they remain an undetermined distance from him–but no more than a radius of a few yards.
Unlike his Trollish forebears he is immune to the effects of sunlight and will not turn to stone when exposed to direct sunlight. He does however share the Trollish ability to see and navigate in near total darkness. In total darkness he still has a special sense which allows him to perceive his environment with equal clarity as normal vision. His fingernails are black and hard like a troll’s, coming however to a low sharp point as opposed to a claw or talon.
Brutus’ irises are a brilliant crimon red which glow red in dark and shadow.
Brutus struggles between the two diametric poles of his nature–he is capable of great nobility, goodness, and compassion but at the same time can be subject to egocentrism, apathy, hedonism, and impulsiveness.
Weapons:
Brutus had his sword called Trollblighter made after his rejection by his father Warlord Khurgg and troll society, as an intentional affront to them. The sword is actually forged of an enchanted metal to which was bound sunlight. When it touches Trollish flesh it emits a burst of sunlight from the blade, turning whatever it touches on the troll’s body to stone.
The metal is an alloy leavened with cold iron and as such is deadly to faerie-kind as well, as they cannot abide the touch of iron to their bodies. It will cause great pain and injury with even just a scratch from the blade and can make a kill of a wound which would normally not be lethal.
